Lover Quilt Designer Quilting Educator
As Tammy Kelly gazes out her sewing room window at a breathtaking view of the San Francisco Peaks, she pauses to give thanks for the many opportunities she’s had. “Just being able to do what I enjoy, is a gift,” says Tammy. Tammy has learned to share that gift with others. She has much to be thankful for including many folks who have provided her with encouragement and other talented artists such as machine quilters, hand quilters, a great photographer and the best graphic designer. |

Tammy has always appreciated textiles and began collecting antique quilts before she learned how to quilt. She brings twenty years of experience to the world of quilting. Tammy loves “playing” with and designing traditional quilts with a twist. Her favorite quilt is always the next one---the one that is yet to be created. Common Threads was born in 2002 when Tammy decided to play around with her own patterns…that’s when she discovered that the triangle was her favorite shape! From there she went on to explore the traditional snowball block and many connecting blocks. Now she is mesmerized with curved piecing. In the future, you will see home decorating projects from Tammy.
Tammy’s favorite quilting topic is COLOR! As the fabric “talks” to her, she carefully chooses just the right color combination for each individual quilt. Although she occasionally applies colored pencil to paper to assist with design, Tammy primarily designs with the fabric before ever putting it on paper. Tammy uses all of her experience as an elementary school teacher when planning and conducting a quilt class. She also encourages her students to be creative in their fabric selection and experiment with design. Tammy has enjoyed teaching quilting in regional quilt shops, for various quilt camps and the local community college. She aspires to be an international quilting teacher. For information on classes and workshops contact Tammy. Tammy’s first book, It’s Quilt Magic, was published with Leisure Arts in 2006. Her second book, Snowball Quilts (2007), and third book, Quiltastic Curves (2008) were both published by Martingale and Company. Many of her quilts have also been published in American Patchwork & Quilting Magazines and calendars. Living in the beautiful mountain town of Flagstaff, Arizona provides many opportunities for Tammy, her husband Dave and daughter Lynnae to enjoy family time as well as entertaining friends with new recipes. |
